"Sellers II"
Sometimes I think that the street saleswoman gets mimicked with her environment and is then part of the landscape. It is known that her labours imply the memory of a people, a history built with transmitted traditions. For me, that is culture. I feel registering these women takes me to the narration of their micro-histories. They build up a place with their presence and tasks.
Sometimes I think that the seller blends in with the space, being part of the landscape itself, we know that his trade brings with him the memory of a town, a story that is built through transmission, that is culture. I feel that registering street vendors links me to tell the stories of those who build a place with their presence and trade.
In this case, the photos show the Andean region, then silence, so characteristic of the Andean world is an image that speaks, a culture that finds the precise moment to conceive the idea. Nothing is known of the street saleswoman’s “before” or “after”.
The photo represents the occasion, the exact instant of her look, the position of her body, her clothing, the passing of time… It is the moment of the street surroundings that uncovers the eldest job – craftsmanship. Everything gets together to convey the sense. With this series of street saleswomen I try to tell those small histories, show their spaces and give significance to their labours.
